great creative journal for my Annie Sloan inspired projects

love this journal/ just what i expected - broken down into the sub-style of shabby chic she explains in her books like french elegance or swedish, she lists defining characteristics of each style & shows her paint colors associated with that style. There are pockets at each section which I am using for paint chips & fabric swatches as I figure out what I want where. I can paint onto the page colors I mix and make notes on them - and I plan to record notes on my projects for future reference

About the Author

In his teens, Russell Heath hitchhiked to Alaska and lived in a cabin on the banks of the Tanana River. In his twenties, he lived in Italy and then traveled overland across the Sahara, through the jungles and over the savannas of Africa and into southern Asia. In his thirties, he sailed alone, in a 25 foot wooden boat, around the world. In his forties, he wrote novels. And in his fifties, he bicycled the spine of the Rockies from Alaska to Mexico. He’s worked on the Alaska Pipeline, as an environmental lobbyist in the Alaska Legislature, and run a storied environmental organization fighting to protect Alaska’s coastal rainforests. Several years ago, he moved to New York City to dig deep into leadership development and coaching. He now coaches business and non-profit leaders as well as people who want to live rich, hand-crafted, masterful lives.

I am absolutely the richer for reading this book!!

Broken Angels is well written with words that painted the varied Alaskan landscape with such richness to detail all my senses were activated, and the depth of each character was complex and believable. I felt immersed in each character and felt a witness and a part of each one's experience. It was like I could step into each characters shoes. While it was an engaging mystery, I feel Russell Heath truly tapped into something far deeper; the mystery of being human. The inner landscape of our being like Alaska with the right conditions can be soft and beautiful and full of light, or harsh and unforgiving and full of darkness where we give no second chances. Each one of these characters, is truly is an angel. Each one took action based upon flawed or broken beliefs, judgments, and assumptions based on their model of the world, leaving a trail of broken spirits. By the end, I felt only compassion for each character. Long after I put this book down, I continued to reflect on these characters. This novel has made an impact and opened me up to the broken angel in all of us, and perhaps the compassion I developed for the characters, I will be able to carry into the "real world" I am richer for having read this book.

Novel Investment for 2015

Brilliant. Exciting. Engaging. I couldn't out it . I'm not much a novel/thriller reader. However, I couldn't put this book down. The characters were so well defined. And the story had such rich detail that you do not want to over look a thing! If you like Stephen King novels and or watch the tv show Criminal Minds..well this will blow you away. Great investment of time. Took me about 4 days to finish. I look forward to reading more from Russell Heath.

Incomplete

This was a very good collection of scriptures, and my own personal sort of "Buddhist Bible" - but there is one slight problem with it; it only contains scriptures from certain sects; it has none of the major (come to think of it, I do not believe any at all) texts from the Theravada sect. It does not even have the Dhammapada, one of the most important Buddhist scriptures out there.
If you have an interest in any sort of buddhism, this is an excellent book. But remember that it is not the only perspective out there.

It has been almost five decades since the Penguin Classics series last launched an anthology of Buddhist texts onto the market, during which time interest in the religion throughout the English-speaking world has grown to more than justify a new anthology well over twice the size of the original. That first volume was largely the work of E. Conze, working from Sanskrit, with heterogeneous scraps of translation from other languages, provided by E. M. Hare, David Snellgrove, Trevor Leggett and D. T. Suzuki, mixed in here and there.

In this new work the editor has made less of a personal contribution through translation, but has done a far superior job of orchestrating a much more balanced whole and equipping it with a reflective and highly readable introduction, which in itself provides a succinct commentary (pp. xiv-xviii) on the history of such anthologies over the years--including in its final paragraph some delightfully (and justifiably) acerbic comments on the codswallop that in all too recent times past was excerpted to represent his own area, Tibetan Buddhism. The generous list of books for further reading on pp. xlii-xlix also deserves commendation.

Inevitably the need to include translations reflecting the current state of Buddhist textual studies has all but wiped out the contribution of United Kingdom-based scholars to the enterprise, though for example the translations of K. R. Norman represent a standard of work unlikely to be matched elsewhere for some time to come, and so still find a place amongst a much longer roster of translations mostly carried out specifically for this anthology and largely undertaken on the other side of the Atlantic. One or two sacrifices have clearly been made in order to find room for such a wealth of materials, notably the exclusion of any of the finding lists cross-referencing the contents by language or by contributor that formed such a useful feature of the editor's earlier anthologies for Princeton University Press, but by and large there is very little here to complain about.

That is not the same, however, as declaring this anthology perfect. Such an ambitious enterprise is bound to entail errors, though mostly (one hopes) errors of the trivial sort that can be readily corrected in future printings.[...]

[...]drawing attention to these lapses is by no means intended to discourage any would-be purchaser: at under ten pounds a copy, one certainly gets a remarkable quantity of good, accurate translation and up-to-date introductory remarks for one's money. No one at all interested in Buddhism should hesitate for a second to make the investment.

Great but BE WARNED:

Great volume, lots of sutras from the Theravada beginnings up to late Mahayana texts all arranged with helpful introductions.

One glaring flaw though: The author decided to leave no separate guide as to which sutra is which. Most books like this will have it in the table of contents or even have a separate table in the beginning or an appendix at the end of the book to guide the reader. For this one though you just have to flip through pages until you find the sutra you're looking for. It's kind of absurd really.

So instead of a table that says the name(s) of the sutras contained within he just made up his own cute little titles.

For example:

If you're looking for the text he included from "The Questions of Milinda (Milindapanha)" you'll just have to guess and flip around until you find out he put it under a section with his own fun little title "One Buddha Per Universe".

Or let's say you want to read the selection from the "Gandavyuha sutra" you'll flip around blindly until you stumble upon "Maya, Mother of The Buddha".

ANOTHER GREAT READ FROM THIS AUTHOR!

4.0 RATING- I'm surprised that more of my GR friends haven't read this author but I'm stoked to have stumbled across her books. As a lover of a damsel in distress story line, the two books I've read from Jessica Gadziala have been perfect for me.

I really like the author's writing style. Both books I've read start off with immediate action, you don't have to read pages and pages of backstory to get pulled into the plot and the pacing is really good. I've been in a bit of a book funk so appreciate the quick draw in. The story isn't sex heavy and isn't as sexy of a read as the first book I read by the author, Reign, but it was still an enjoyable read and one I'd recommend for other readers that enjoy lite romantic suspense or "woman on the run" plots.

One note, Dark Mysteries can absolutely be read as a stand-alone. However, there are several spoilers in this book about What The Heart Needs. Since I really liked the authors writing, I knew I'd likely be reading several of her books. Unfortunately, by the time I realized the book contained spoilers and I should have read What the Heart Needs first, I was already too far into Dark Mysteries to put it down. For readers that have any interest in reading other books by the author, I'd start with What the Heart Needs before reading Dark Mysteries to avoid spoilers.

I would not hesitate to read any of her books without bothering to read the blurbs.

I absolutely love every one of Jessica Gadziala books that I have read. Dark Mysteries is an offshoot of her "What The Heart" series. Xander Rhodes is a PI to end all PI's. Ellie needs help now, like yesterday. She has tried every way she knows to find someone who will help her. Ellie has a stalker and he means business. When she turns up at Xander's door wet and disheveled he quickly decides to help her.

I love the author's ability to keep you turning the pages, no matter if she is writing a "simple" love story or a suspense filled drama(with romance of course). I wish I could write a review that does justice to her work. Instead you all have to be content with my gushing heartfelt recommendation. First off, read the "What the Heart" series. While each book stands alone in it's focus on one couple, there are recurring characters who have their own stories.

I would not hesitate to read any of her books without bothering to read the blurbs. I do not believe I would be disappointed.

I picked up a couple of books by this author, trying to find a book or series that will fill my time at work, and I have to admit, they are well worth my time. DARK MYSTERIES held my eyes from page one until the end, and well past my bedtime too, lol. The phrase, just one more chapter and I'll get some sleep, was repeated, ad nauseam, in my head.
I was hooked on Xander, he just grabbed me, wish I could tell you why. Maybe it was the self torment of not being there for his client, or the way he took to caring for Ellie right away. He's a PI I would go to any time. Ellie was someone that I could get behind. She left a bad situation, did things to be safe until it wasn't possible to do it alone anymore.
My only drawback to this book is that it wasn't longer. Unfortunately, my sleep deprived brain can't think of what more this book needs.

"There are a lot of books that show collections of logos. But Logo Design Love is something different: it's a guide for designers (and clients) who want to understand what this mysterious business is all about. Written in a reader-friendly, concise language, with a minimum of designer jargon, Airey gives a surprisingly clear explanation of the process, using a wide assortment of real-life examples to support his points. An incredible book showcasing the power of effective branding. Something that I appreciate most about this book is how the author David Airey shows you his thoughts, sketches and ideas. A resource to have in your possession if you are someone who enjoys branding, or creates brands for others.

Also, out of all the books I have read on this subject. David hit's it home in a way that makes sense.

Every graphic designer should read this.

I am a graphic designer and I can not say enough good things about this book. It is a fantastic book for graphic designers and identity experts.I cannot attest to the difference between the first and second edition as I only read this one. The sheer quality of the advice and case studies in this book is incredible. The information in this book is presented in such a matter of fact manner that not only is it a pretty quick read but very easy to absorb. The only down side I could possibly think of for this book is that it could probably be twice as long if Airey went into more detail on some of the more complex theories in this book. I will definitely be coming back to this book again and again as a resource while designing my graphic identities.

This was not really what I expected. I was looking more for a book that would walk you through the thought processes and planning for logo design. I really feel the book simply a showcase of the successful work by some of the largest design firms in the business. If your looking for advice about creating new logo /marketing symbols from the ground up, this is not the book.
