If you're going to buy this, buy the full version instead

I purchased this book on accident not realizing it wasn't the full version and only an introduction. I have the "arrhythmia recognition" version of this book and it worked very well for me throughout the cardiology portion of paramedic class. I purchased this after paramedic class to further my knowledge. From what I read from this book it was just as good as the basic version. If you're going to spend the money to purchase this book, just spend the money to purchase the full version.

Purchased this book for my EKG Class and I loved every page of it. The only complaint I had was that you get thrown for a loop when the book transitions from generalized Wave Readings to in depth readings.

A Must-Read Book for the Power System Engineer at the Leading Edge

Steve Sandler's new book, "Power Integrity," is what many of us in the power industry have been waiting for. As power densities and switching speeds increase, the challenge of measurement and optimization grows disproportionately. Steve has a wonderful ability to walk the reader through all the fundamentals and then take you to the next level of understanding. This book is a must-have companion for any engineer wanting to design power systems at the leader edge.

A must have!

I've worked in a power conversion and delivery lab environment as an engineering technician for eleven years; and this is the first reference book I've seen that covers this very important topic. This book is a must have for any engineer, or technician, who makes measurements in a lab environment. It is very easy to read and understand, with many pictures of test setups and waveform captures to aid in measurement applications. I am also currently attending electrical engineering school, and feel this book would be extremely helpful in the lab environment for students who have little to no experience making measurements.

Many real world examples and measurement pitfalls, that would normally take someone years to learn by trial and error, are included in the book, with an index for quick reference. Steve worked with many test equipment vendors, and with several different models of equipment. This is important because we don’t all have the same equipment on our benches; but the odds are your model, or something like your model, is covered in this book.

I especially appreciate the fact that Steve covers component data sheets, and how the specifications in them can be misleading. This is important to understand because it leads to designs that do not perform as expected. He explains areas to watch out for with examples.

The second half of the book goes over important measurements for power distribution networks (how and why). Stability, current transient response, impedance measurements, and much more are covered in this section.

Thanks to Steve Sandler for spending the many hours it took to thoroughly understand and explain the many measurements and pitfalls associated with power-related parameters!

fills a gap on the market Steven Sandler: Power Integrity

Together with my colleagues I was looking for a longer time for an appropriate book in the power supply/PDN measurements topic, that is primarily strongly praxis/measurement oriented.
We ordered more examples of this book at the end of 2014. The book was at that time not even available on the market, we did not really know, what will we get. There were no customer reviews available at that time.
After receiving the books it did not take us long to realize, that the book meets all our expectations, and even much more...
The book is written in an easy to read and comprehend style, although theoretically well-founded.
The coloured pictures, diagrams and schematics make it simply delightful, it was a great idea to do it this way.

Mr. Sandler's: Power Integrity is used almost on a daily basis in our work, and it is an appreciated peace of our library.
We can strongly recommend the book to every practicing engineer involved/interested in power supply and PDN design/measurement topics.

This book is an excellent introduction to both information modeling in ORM and relational databases. The book is very clearly written in a step-by-step manner, and contains an abundance of well-chosen examples illuminating practice and theory in information modeling. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in conceptual modeling and databases.

He has led database research teams at several companies including Visio Corporation and Microsoft Corporation, where he worked on the conceptual and logical database modeling technology in Microsoft Visio for Enterprise Architects. Fantastic Book

If you intend to create genuinely useful business applications without first creating an accurate conceptual data model and deriving the database schema from the model, then I hope your projects have very large budgets and flexible deadlines, because you'll need both. Accurate conceptual data models are not an academic curiousity, they are a practical necessity. Well designed databases are the heart of every business application, and accurate conceptual data models are the foundation of every well designed database.

This book presents a method for data modeling called Object Role Modeling (ORM). If you've never created a data model before, you might as well learn the best method from the start. If you've used E-R (Entity Relationship) modeling before, this is your chance to learn a method that overcomes the limitations of E-R, while building on the knowledge you already have.

ORM is based on facts (assertions about the business sphere you are modeling), not entities and attributes. Business users understand facts much better than they understand data modeling abstractions. By using ORM facts, you create your data model in a language that business users can understand and validate. Poor communication with business users and inadequate understanding of requirements are major causes of design deficiencies. ORM solves these issues through its fact based approach.

ORM is also much more expressive than any other popular data modeling notation, ncluding UML and all major flavors of E-R. Many business rules should be expressed as data constraints, but traditional data modeling languages don't do well at capturing these constraints. By capturing the constraints in an ORM model and validating with the users, you make the construction of a good application much easier.

Halpin is an excellent writer, and this book is very easy to read. The many examples and crisp writing style mean that you'll actually understand what the author intends, a refreshing change from most computer books. If you've read the previous edition of this book, this update is very worthwhile. There is a lot of expanded and new material, and you'll be happy you purchased the new edition.

The best book on database design

This new edition of Information Modeling and Relational Databases maintains its predecessor's achievement of being the best, most complete book out there on design of information systems, and particularly of database schemas -- and of seeming a few decades ahead of the rest of the pack! The relational database theory world seems to move at a rather glacier-like pace -- with the result that some of the schema design methods still in common use have stayed well past their "obsolete by" date. But as a reviewer of the first edition said, this book presents MATURE database design technology; and it can only be hoped that the database design world will sooner, rather than later, realize the immense, and immensely practical, value of the mature theory and design procedure that this book presents. Do you want to be able to arrive at the correct schema the first time? or even to know whether you've reached it or not? This is the book that shows you how, and gives you a rich, formal modeling notation that has very significant and improving tool support. Terry and Tony have both added very valuable new chapters to the book, and expanded and updated the other chapters, so that this is a very much improved book -- as amazing as that may seem to those (like me) who loved the first edition. This book will, in my opinion, be setting the standard for books on information system design for many years to come.

Get to a higher level when modeling data: concept models

Before knowing about Dr. Helpin's CSDP, I often struggled to find the appropiate data model for the project at hand. Model validation with users was not straight-forward: users do not think of the world in terms of entities and relationships of the ER model - They think about facts and concepts. Now, I do not try to fight with a data model, I build the ORM model and let the procedure to build the ER one.

There is a subset of people who are different from the normal population. Their brains are wired a bit differently, or they went through experiences in their lives that contributed to their introversion, social avoidance, and shyness. You're done before you even knew you'd started

This is good as far as it goes, but 17 pages for $3 isn't going very far. And really, it's more like 12 pages, because the last third is a "preview" of another book on obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. If this were $0.99, I'd probably give it two or three stars.

Stephen Greenblatt (Ph.D. Yale) is Cogan University Professor of the Humanities at Harvard University. Also General Editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature, he is the author of eleven books, including The Swerve: How the World Became Modern (winner of the 2011 National Book Award and the 2012 Pulitzer Prize); Shakespeare's Freedom; Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare; Hamlet in Purgatory; Marvelous Possessions: The Wonder of the New World; Learning to Curse: Essays in Early Modern Culture; and Renaissance Self-Fashioning: From More to Shakespeare. He has edited seven collections of criticism, including Cultural Mobility: A Manifesto, and is a founding coeditor of the journal Representations. His honors include the MLA’s James Russell Lowell Prize, for both Shakespearean Negotiations: The Circulation of Social Energy in Renaissance England and The Swerve, the Sapegno Prize, the Distinguished Humanist Award from the Mellon Foundation, the Wilbur Cross Medal from the Yale University Graduate School, the William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre, the Erasmus Institute Prize, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of California, Berkeley. Warner, Cultural Institutions of the Novel. She is also an editor of The Norton Anthology of English Literature. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Humanities Center and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and of the Northeast Association of Graduate Schools’ Graduate Faculty Teaching Award.

Katharine Eisaman Maus (Ph.D. Johns Hopkins) is James Branch Cabell Professor of English at the University of Virginia. Jon Stallworthy (M.A. and B.Litt. Oxford) is Senior Research Fellow at Wolfson College of Oxford University, where he is an Emeritus Professor of English Literature. He is also former John Wendell Anderson Professor at Cornell, where he taught after a career at Oxford University Press. His biography of Wilfred Owen won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize, the W. H. Smith Literary Award, and the E. M. Forster Award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His biography of Louis MacNeice won the Southern Arts Literary Prize. Jack Stillinger (Ph.D. Harvard) is Center for Advanced Study Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Illinois. It's a keeper!

The 8th edition of the Norton Anthology of English Literature is edited by Greenblatt and contains "the major authors" only. This thorough overview of the genre ranges from 15 c. Anglo Saxon literature (including Seamus Heaney's translation of "Beowulf") to some contemporary British literature (including work by JM Coetzee and Salman Rushdie). The selections are good ones and do not seem to suffer from a single editorial point of view or tone (unlike the Penguin survey edition of modern literature that is, frankly, a complete downer). This Norton edition includes classics such as John Donne's "Meditation 17", Swift's "A Modest Proposal", Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", an excerpt from Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication on the Rights of Women", "Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own" and so on (it might be a bit thin on the ladies but what is included is the good stuff). As an English teacher and probable reference freak, I am pleased with it.

Incredible Amount of Excellent Literature All in One Book!

While there have been changes made to the Norton Anthology of English Literature, Volume 1 (or A), there's no mistaking that in its genre, this is a masterpiece. It's easy to quibble with which selections make it in and which versions are used, etc. But this is an incredibly rich resource of early English literature.

This is one of the books that helped foster my love of literature, and that of many others. It is a portal to any number of authors you wish to read in more detail. It's hard not to love a book that gives you introductions to the following authors and works - and many, many more!

The size is worth it for the breadth and depth of content. As for price, there are many inexpensive used editions around, going back to many earlier editions.

Everything in the palm of your hand. Or, hands...

This edition of the Norton Anthology should be required for any literate person to own and at least leaf through, if not completely consume. It's a terrific collection of the bests of English literature, with very insightful footnotes on each piece. A good purchase, and was a good choice for my professor, who assigned it as the text for an Eng. Lit course. The only problem was the size - this tome is a monster! Definitely not something to carry to the beach, or even on a plane.
