Adore!

I was simply delighted by this book. I wouldn't have tried it if not for the good book buzz around it and I am happy to buzz some more.

It is a lovely little novella that takes on so much that matters: friendship, age differneces, sexual agency, class, inter racial dating, varied bodied but does so with joy in each each person.

The heroine is great and the hero is steadfast and honest. Everyone in this book in grown (well maybe not the heroine's best friend) and reacts in realistic and practical ways.

Weatherspoon does such a good job with the attraction, falling in love and dilemma's of this romance.

I do wish we had a bit more. I like to linger into happily ever after. I hear we shall be seeing more of them in the future. I need Daniella to have her own book. Need.

There's a few things about this that made me cringe because I'm clearly not the audience that this was meant for.

Twenty-four year old Kayla Davis is unemployed and looking for work but she's only interested in a particular field even though she's almost out of options and money. After multiple applications and interviews she's still without a job. Her roommate and best friend, Adler (a girl), suggests that she become a sugar baby - a kept woman - to which Kayla agrees. At a mixer, Kayla meets 49-years-old Michael Bradbury who happens to be the billionaire owner of the company for which Kayla signs up.

I should have stopped at any of these themes - billionaire, new adult/young adult, May-December, sugar Daddy but this was a recommendation and I wanted to give it a fair shot. I'm still trying to figure out the compatibility of these two very different people especially with such a wide age gap; it wasn't explained with anything other than aesthetics - Kayla's butt (no joke) and Michael's handsomeness. There were glimpses of personality that wanted to burst through but they kept getting lost in the snark and sex.

There're a few other things I was curious about and wanted to know more but in the end I was just glad it was over quickly. Unfortunately, for this reader the syntax errors and poorly executed first person POV were not worth the price - $2.99.

Sex positive erotica between an older man and a WoC

SO SWEET was part of a giveaway via Instafreebie a few weeks ago. Even though I'm so over billionaire romances, a few phrases leaped out at me while reading reviews: "sex positive," "woman of color," and "realistic." Words and phrases that, you'll agree, don't often appear in books of this genre. I decided to take a look.

Kayla is living with her flaky roommate, Adler, and both of them are in trouble. Kayla is failing job search after job search, and Adler isn't really looking. Rent is due soon, and both of them are either going to a) become homeless or b) have to live with their parents again unless they can come up with some quick money.

Under the - ill-advised - suggestion of Adler, Kayla decides to make money in the tried-and-true way of new adult novels everywhere: sell sex for money. However, rather than looking for a tattooed rock musician, or an angsty artist who is secretly rich, she looks for a sugar daddy by going to Arrangements.com, which is kind of like the internet dating equivalent of an escort service. She will hook up with an older guy, basically trading sex for payment of student loans, apartment rent, and clothes.

At one of the mixers, Kayla doesn't really feel the scene, and ends up sitting down at a table with a guy who says he isn't feeling the scene either. They talk - and Kayla realizes (SURPRISE!) that this is Michael Bradbury, the founder of Arrangements, as well as several other endeavors. He's no Christian Grey, though. He has the nerdy hippie vibe of a tech-made billionaire, and I appreciated that. I also liked the portrayal of Kayla, and some of the issues she dealt with as a young black woman.

SO SWEET is short but, well, sweet. Clocking in at only about 100 pages, a good portion of the novelette is about sex. It's well-written sex, but doesn't leave much in the way of plot or character development, and while I liked Kayla and Michael, I didn't really get a feel for who they were as people until the very end, when Kayla starts having some friendship problems with Adler, and both Michael and Daniella give her very good advice on how to deal with it (which she follows!).

The sex, as I said, was well written and the vibe of the book is definitely sex positive. It was nice to read about a heroine who was familiar with her body, enjoyed and pursued sex, and masturbated. On the other hand, there were a few scenes that made me raise my eyebrows. At first, when she and Michael are about to engage in anal sex, she proposes training up to it with a plug and lube, which actually made me happy, because yay, realism. But then Michael is like, "No, it's okay, we'll go slow." And Kayla is like, "I had anal sex years ago, so this barely hurts at all, I'm totally feeling it."

I *HATED* This Book

This book is awful. Seriously, save yourself the money. Instead, find a drunken frat buddy -- ideally one who is a failed comic. If they're childless, the advice will be on-par with this book. If they have a kid, then you actually might come out ahead. Either way, at least you'll be drunk.

This book makes every stupid cliche joke you can think of. Worst of all, it imparts little-to-no useful information.

Unsatisfied, I looked around for another book, and found "The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips, and Advice for Dads-to-Be." I'm about 1/3 of the way in, but I've already learned more than I did from the entirety of the "Dude!" book.

Seriously, I read the entire thing.

Learn from my pain.

Do not buy this book.

Probably the worst book I've ever read

This is a book that has less actual information that 1 page on wikipedia. Book is TLDR; "Your wife will be emotional. Your wife will need your support. Boobs!"

Basically, this book is like a less funny episode of the 90's sitcom "Home Improvement". Tim "the toolman" Taylor is the author, and he went to his knowledgable neighbor, Wilson, to learn about pregnancy. He then comes home and writes a book, filled with cheap jokes and information that is basic to anyone that could be in the position to actually read this book. Any good review of this book is written by a wife who gave this book to their husband, he lied about reading it and said it was good. Save your time & money.

Mastitis - Difficult problem, but easy to manage.

This is a good collection of articles and research works done perfectly to improve the knowledge practioners already has. I'm reading and getting so excited with information. There are little things here and there on the farm that sometimes we do not pay much attention to, but in reality they mean alot. I will recommend this book for dairy herd professioners and managers.

Strong, brave and wise beyond his years, Jamie MacAllister either impresses or angers all he meets. Escaping to a nearby Kentucky settlement, he makes still more enemies. After Jamie kills John Jackson's son in self defense, he must flee west with his beloved, Kate Olmstead--ironically, the daughter of another enemy--where they marry and are besieged by Shawnees, the Jacksons and bounty hunters--most of whom eventually die by Jamie's hand. The two then settle in East Texas, where Jamie is pressed into service to fight in the coming war with Mexico. Jamie serves with distinction and manages to escape the massacre at the Alamo. Alas, at war's end, he and his bride must still elude those thirsting for their blood. Johnstone ( Fury in the Ashes ), on rare occasion, molds history to fit his tale. However, neither these liberties, nor the one-dimensional characters dampen this rousing, two-fisted saga of the growing American frontier.

Great Book from Start to Finish!!

I bought a large number of these titles for my husband (fiance' at the time) as a gift because he mentioned being a fan of this author's original series of books. He has verbalized that he thoroughly enjoyed all of the titles in the series so I will pretty much copy/paste this review on all of the titles. He fully recommends all the ones written by the actual author. He does not feel the same about the ones apparently written by the heirs of his publishing projects, but all books we will be commenting on, he enjoyed and thinks any fan of western literature would enjoy them as well.

This is the book that started the Jaime Ian Mac series and the best one. One of my favorite books of all time. I've read all the books in this series but I've read the first 4 several times.

Outstanding Read

I enjoy reading very much and I'm always looking for new authors and different stories. I decided to look for a good western story and investigated which were the best western authors. William Johnstone came highly recommended and I was not disappointed. I'm so glad I selected the Eagle series to begin with. I had no idea this book would be linked to so much history (the Alamo) and historical characters I was familiar with (Crocket, Bowie, etc.) It just added to the enjoyment of reading this book. I found the adventures of Jamie MacAllister growing from a small boy to a family man engrossing and very entertaining. The story and action reminded me of the western movies and comic books I enjoyed as a boy years ago. I look forward to reading more about Jamie MacAllister as well as other William Johnstone books.

About the Author

Stuart R. Lynn is Associate Professor of Economics and Global Studies at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill (1971) and has taught Economic Development for 16 years, first at Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne and since 1987 at Assumption College.

In addition to teaching, Professor Lynn spent 11 years in the U.S. Foreign Service. Four of those years were spent reporting on economic issues from the U.S. Embassies in Lagos, Nigeria, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. In Lagos, he reported on petroleum and macroeconomic issues. In Dar es Salaam, he reported on all economic issues, including Tanzania's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund. Professor Lynn also spent seven years at the State Department in Washington, D.C., working on issues of trade, investment, and petroleum in developing countries. His work included developing-country compliance with rules of the GATT (now WTO) and negotiation of Bilateral Investment Treaties. He also helped oversee economics training courses at the Foreign Service Institute.

APPROACH

Textbooks in economic development have a great deal in common. Still, each author brings a different style, approach, organization, and sense of what is important.

Economic Development: Theory and Practice for a Divided World has grown out of the economic development course that I have taught, off and on, for over 30 years. When I was introduced to economic development as a student, economic planning was given much more emphasis than it is today. Government responsibility was deemed essential in the absence of viable markets in many countries, and the serious deficiencies of many government solutions were not yet apparent. On the other hand, health, education, and environmental issues were not considered to be very important. As the concerns of economists have broadened over the last three decades, so has the coverage of courses in economic development.

My approach highlights three key ideas:

• Divided World: The title of the book includes the phrase "a divided world." This division has been manifested over the last four decades in the stages of development and the approaches to development policy. There are still wide gaps between rich and poor countries and between market-oriented and state-oriented approaches. Nevertheless, many countries are neither rich nor poor, and the line between market and state orientation is often blurred. I address the roles of market and government in each chapter.
• Controversy: One element I have often found muted in other texts is a sense of the controversy that has marked this field. Accepted answers change from one decade to the next, as do some of the key questions. It is important to understand how debates have led to current views in different areas of economic theory and policy, so I have included more background on these debates.
• Theory and Practice: Finally, I have combined theory and practice in a way that gives students a practical understanding of what the theoretical fuss is all about. Practical application is provided through numerous cases and Development Spotlight boxes in each chapter.

AUDIENCE

Economic Development: Theory and Practice for a Divided World is aimed at students taking a first course in economic development. It requires only a basic knowledge of economics—students need to have taken only introductory micro- and macroeconomics courses. Some concepts are introduced that go a bit beyond what is normally given at the introductory level. This approach allows, even encourages, students who may not be economics majors to become familiar with the subject. Students whose interest may be in political science, international studies, sociology, anthropology, and related areas will find the text interesting and accessible.

ORGANIZATION

The book is divided into five parts. Part I, "Introduction to Economic Development," consists of three chapters. Chapter 1, "The Idea of Economic Development," introduces students to the subject by raising questions of what we mean by development. Chapter 2, "Measuring Economic Development," describes problems of measuring the concept. Chapter 3, "The Evolution of Development Thought," shows how the economics profession has changed its approaches over the years. Because anthropologists, political scientists, and others have a great deal to say about these issues, it is important to stake out the realm of economics and to admit that the boundaries are often fuzzy.

Part II, "Resources for Development," discusses the "raw materials" of, or inputs into, economic development: capital, resources, and labor. Chapter 4, "Financial Resources for Development," discusses the role of saving and investment in economic development, while Chapter 5, "Natural Building Blocks of Development: Resources and the Environment," discusses natural resources and the environment. Chapter 6, "Population Growth and Migration," and Chapter 7, "Human Capital: Health and Education," address more specifically the human element: population growth and migration, and enhancing human capital through improved health and education.

Part III, "Productive Sectors and the State," first addresses the two main productive sectors in Chapter 8, "The Key Role of Agriculture in Development," and Chapter 9, "Industry, Technology, and Employment." Part III concludes with two chapters on the role of government. While governments, and their policies, are evident throughout the book, it is essential to provide a general framework for the debate over what government can do and how its performance can be improved. Chapter 10, "The Ambiguous Role of the State in Development," addresses these general questions, while Chapter 11, "Macroeconomic Policy, Inflation, and Stabilization," considers macroeconomic policy specifically.

Part IV, "The International Economics of Development," surveys the international economic environment of development. It begins with "Foreign Trade and Development Strategy," in Chapter 12, then "Foreign Aid and Direct Investment," in Chapter 13. Chapter 14, "Debt and Adjustment," addresses international debt and the problem of restructuring troubled economies, which bedeviled much of Latin America in the 1980s and weighs heavily on many African economies today. Chapter 15, "Global Capital Markets and the East Asian Development Model," follows up with the newer problem of adjusting to short-term capital flows, especially as it struck the East Asian economies in the late 1990s.

Part V, "Conclusions," consists of Chapter 16, "Lessons Learned and Open Questions." This final chapter takes stock of the changes in, and contributions of, economic development as a discipline and sums up the lessons of development policy, particularly as it relates to the role of government.

About the Author
Jesper Schmidt Hansen holds a Ph.D. in soft-material science and is currently doing research in the field of nanofluidics and dynamics at Roskilde University, Denmark. He has been using GNU Octave on a daily basis for many years, both as a student and later as a researcher. The applications have varied from solving partial and ordinary differential equations, simple data plotting, and data generation for other applications, to dynamical system investigations and advanced data analysis.

Great book for someone learning Octave

GNU Octave Beginner's Guide by Jesper Schmidt Hansen is a good, readable introduction to Octave. It will shorten your learning curve, and get you up and running quickly.

Octave is an open source alternative to MATLAB. So, why use Octave instead of MATLAB?

MATLAB is an extremely powerful, yet easy to use software package for scientific, engineering, and mathematical computations. MATLAB is also very expensive. An individual commercial license costs $2100. To use MATLAB, as an individual, you must purchase a commercial license, unless you are a student enrolled in an academic institution, or you work for an academic institution, even if your use is personal and not commercial. Not sure about you, but $2100 puts MATLAB a bit outside my price range.

If you already have access to MATLAB, great! Use it.

If not, Octave is a good alternative as it provides much of the functionality of MATLAB, with none of the cost.

Like Python, Octave is a high level, interpreted programming language. Unlike Python, it is focused on numerical computation. With its interactive shell, you can use Octave like an advanced calculator, to get immediate results, and to test code fragments. But you can also develop advanced programs using Octave.

So, what does Hansen's "GNU Octave Beginner's Guide" have to offer? Quite a lot if you are just starting out using Octave.

Chapter 1 walks you through installing Octave for Windows and Linux, setting and storing defaults, adding packages, etc. Everyone should read the instructions for both operating systems, as some useful information appears only one place.

Chapter 2 teaches you to use scalars, vectors, matrices, strings, arrays and solve linear equations.

Chapter 3 tells you how to use Octave's built-in functions, and how to make 2-d and 3-d plots.

Chapter 4 covers programing essentials, including using if, switch, for, do, and while statements; controlling exceptions; input and output; and saving and restoring scripts.

Chapter 5 teaches you to write and use your own functions, and introduces you to debugging and vectorization.

Chapter 6 introduces you to sparse matrices, and walks you through all the steps needed to build an Octave package that solves 1-d and 2-d Poisson partial differential equations.

Chapter 7 deals with data files and data analysis, descriptive statistics, fitting functions to data, and use of Fast Fourier Transforms in data analysis and smoothing.

Chapter 8, the final chapter, tells you how to make Octave programs run faster and how to call routines written in C++.

All considered, this book covers a lot of territory, and does it very well. The only negative is that some typos are scattered throughout the book. But they are minor, and I didn't find any that would cause problems.

A methodical approach to learning Octave

My first pass at Octave was a few weeks ago, when I took a scattershot approach to learn just enough Octave to get some quick work done on a data analysis project. As soon as I heard about this book, I bought it and read it start to finish, with frequent expressions of "Oh, I wish I'd known that!" or "That would be a much cleaner way to do it."

Hansen takes the user through the learning process in a step-by-step way, each step building on the one before it with just the right amount of new material to draw the reader along without feeling overwhelmed. Yes, you should know some math, but that's a prerequisite for using Octave in the first place. The examples are interesting enough to show the reader how to get real work done without a huge amount of effort. Hansen also highlights ways to make Octave scripts highly compatible with Matlab. Had I known these tips on my first project, my Matlab-user colleague would not have had to edit what I gave him to run my programs on his system.

The biggest suggestion for improvement, which I have already passed along to Hansen, is to add some tips on reading data files not specifically created by or for Octave.

This is definitely a good read for a new Octave user.

Gentle way to get to know the programming language Octave

This is a good guide for someone with previous programming experience (at least some) or undergraduates with a math background who want to learn to use computers as a powerful math tool.

The structure is well thought out, and the explanations are generally clear. The examples are well chosen also. I find myself hoping that Mr. Hanson might come out with a sequel, as Octave is rich enough to be worth more than one book.

Octave is the free, open source alternative to Matlab, and will run many of the same scripts. With this entry, Octave shows it has matured, and has some momentum. I have spent about 2 weeks with this book and have only covered perhaps half of it's topics, but it is far more accessible then most college textbooks. I do recommend it for your bookshelf.
