The book collects more than 200 of her syndicated four-panel strip Ernie Pook's Comeek, in which Barry deftly maps the emotional terrain of Marlys and the inevitable social traumas inherent in growing up. Alternating among the voices of the family, Barry offers stories on difficult teachers (Mr. Valotto has sideburns, wears turtleneck dickeys and "thinks he's hip"); boys (Marlys goes broke "buying Twinkies to split with Kevin Turner"); Marlys's difficult mother ("five guys asked her to marry them before she picked my father, the worst mistake of her life") and much more. While Barry can be funny presenting the silly escapades and fantasies of Marlys, Arna, Freddie and Arnold, her real talent is the very nearly poetic invocation of moments of pubescent joy and humiliation as well as of the wonder at the fast-approaching, mysterious state of being a teenager. Sasquatch Books began rectifying that situation with The Freddie Stories (1999) and continues in this generous collection focused on preteen Marlys without neglecting her teenaged sister, Maybonne, their freaky little brother, Freddie, and assorted cousins and neighbors. Marlys and her siblings have it tough. Their father is absent, their mother detached, and their existence hardscrabble. They find comfort in childhood joys that most will recognize, from baton lessons and toys from Sears to first love and the last day of school. The fortification they derive from those simple pleasures helps them survive the callous teachers, ruthless classmates, and vicious dogs that afflict them at every turn. The most popular member of "Ernie Pook's" cast, Marlys is endearingly gawky. The Greatest of Marlys is my most recent book by Lynda Barry and I recommend it highly for a number of reasons. I am a white 63 year old doctor who has read, out of order, nearly everything Ms. Barry has published. I mention that because I am probably not her typical reader. Yet, I have learned much from her work and have great admiration for her insights into preadolescent boys and girls. Although probably based somewhat on her own experiences, she his extraordinary insight into the mental life of her characters. Her deliberately amateurish drawings are perfectly suited to stories she relates through her graphic art. No, these are not cartoons, in my opinion, but miniature stories with illustrations that give life to her characters narrative. Lynda Barry is, in fact, a true artist.

Lynda Barry gets to the heart of things. Some of the comics are funny. Some are more poignant, even a bit painful. She gets kids. However, these comics are for adults or young adults.

About the Author

Darryl Benjamin is a passionate educator and advocate for sustainable food systems. He holds a Leadership for Sustainable Food Systems Professional Certificate from the University of Vermont, an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and a BA in English Literature from McGill University. Benjamin is cofounder and president of The GMO Breakthrough Education Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to transforming global food systems through education. Benjamin has taught at over a dozen universities and colleges in Massachusetts and Vermont, including six years in food sustainability, writing, and marketing at New England Culinary Institute. He currently lectures and conducts seminars on sustainable food systems, GMOs, and farm-to-table principles.

Chef Lyndon Virkler is dean of faculty at New England Culinary Institute. He holds a Master’s Degree in Adult and Higher Education from Vermont College of Union Institute and University, a BA in American Literature from Middlebury College, and an Associates of Occupational Science from The Culinary Institute of America. Since joining New England Culinary Institute in 1988, Chef Virkler has been active in a number of issues related to food and agriculture. He is a founding member of the Vermont Fresh Network and the Vermont chapter of Chefs Collaborative. He currently serves as co-chair of the food education committee of the Central Vermont Food Systems Council, an organization focused on developing a sustainable food system within Washington County. He is an avid skier, home gardener, and composter and has been involved in incorporating the sustainable food systems component into New England Culinary Institute’s curriculum. He has also worked on a number of recipe development projects for food companies including Bruegger’s Bagels, Cabot Cheese, and the Vermont Apple Grower’s Association. Lyndon lives in Waitsfield, Vermont with his wife, Joanne, and has two daughters and two grandchildren.

Harvard scholar Hinsch's careful study belies the official Chinese notion that homosexuality is a recent import from the decadent West. Using literary, ethnographic and historical sources, he demonstrates that male homosexuality was relatively open and tolerated through most of China's dynasties. Contrary to the accepted image of the rigid Confucian family that permitted only marriage-based sex, Hinsch's broad canvas encompasses same-sex relationships between members of different generations and social classes. Bisexuality was even more widespread than exclusive homosexuality; same-sex marriages for both men and women were institutionalized. Although very little documentation survives on lesbian life in China, Hinsch summarizes the existing information in an appendix. Homosexuals in contemporary China, he observes, live in isolation and fear of legal prosecution. This revealing study fills a major gap.

Hinsch cites evidence of the homosexual tradition in China derived primarily from literature--novels, poetry, and (often very frank and graphic) humor--and secondarily from historical documents. This evidence reveals societal attitudes toward various facets of the issue, such as superior-inferior relationships, prostitution, and political corruption. Examples from the earlier dynasties are few, and here Hinsch often resorts to reading between the lines; throughout there are conclusions based on supposition or assumptions. Nevertheless, the material is well covered, and monographic treatment of the topic is scanty. Recommended for Chinese and gay studies collections.

Readable, fascinating, deserves a wider audience!

I came across this book while researching society and family in ancient China. This is one of those books that really change your worldview - it should be reprinted, updated, available as a mass market paperback! It's very well-written. Although it's a phD dissertation, it's directed at the lay reader, unputdownable, and makes some very important arguments about Chinese society that contemporary Chinese should all know about. Contains some really moving passages from classical Chinese literature, funny jokes that show that the ancient Chinese were as amusing as the Italians in The Decameron or as bawdy as the English pilgrims in Canterbury Tales. Humanizes the ancient Chinese who otherwise appear as stiff, prudish, and boring. A lot of these literary texts have been untranslated, undiscovered, or quietly 'forgotten'. This book would be enjoyed by any Asian or non-Asian literary person. It's not just for a gay audience or an academic community. I'm buying this author's other book as well, about Women in Ancient China, because I'm sure it would just be as well-researched and enjoyable.

Not Just for China Scholars

This delightfully accessible book on an inaccessible topic provides an appetizing read. Bejeweled with wonderful quotations which are variously elegant, erotic, bawdy, and sometimes just simply endearing, the author reviews the two thousand year literary tradition of male same-sex attraction known as the "cut sleeve" (based on a lovely story which I will not spoil by recounting). In the course of this overview, the author provides interesting evidence of the benefits to kinship groups of same-sex relationships as well as the manner in which this tradition harmonized with reproductive marriage. Lastly, he describes how this tradition was lost--though one suspects that his explanation based on western cultural influence does not do justice to indigenous circumstance.

Designed in the 1950s, the US Marines' M50 Ontos and the US Army's M56 Scorpion were both intended to be fast, light, air-droppable tank-killers for the Cold War battlefield--an answer to the cumbersome and ineffective World War II-vintage tanks that had taken to the battlefield during the Korean War. Although they shared the aim of bringing light, mobile, and lethal antitank firepower to the infantry, the two vehicles varied wildly in design to cater for their unique mission demands. They first saw service in the Lebanon intervention of 1958 but it was in the Vietnam War that they made their name, with the M50 Ontos seeing intense combat action in the 1968 Battle of Hue.

Detailed illustrations and expert analysis provide the reader with a comprehensive history of these deadly antitank vehicles, from early development through to their combat history and the eventual disbandment of the Marine Corps' last antitank battalion with M50A1s in 1971.

About the Author

Kenneth W. Estes served in the US Marine Corps until 1993. He taught History at Duke University and the US Naval Academy. He was made an Honorary Legionnaire in the Spanish Legion in 1992.

Henry Morshead is a design consultant in the European automotive and aerospace sectors. A former officer in the Royal Engineers, and an illustrator, he is interested in the design and use of military vehicles.

Johnny Shumate is a freelance illustrator living in Nashville, Tennessee. He began his career in 1987.

M50 Ontos and M56 Scorpian

The M50 Ontos (Greek for 'thing') has a cult following with armor buffs. It's so ugly, awkward and unusual, it begs attention. Created during the tank crisis of the Korean War, it was designed quickly, ran into usual problems with development, entering service in 1956. About 300 were made and its combat service was, as with many designs, for a role it was never intended. The M50 was popular with Marines in Vietnam for anti personnel use. Firing six rounds of 106 mm flechettes into attacking infantry is effective. I've been inside these - they are tiny!!

The M56 looks more conventional and is a flashback to WW2 early tank destroyers - small chassis vehicles to transport an anti tank gun. Developed around the same time as the Ontos, it too served more for infantry support in Vietnam rather than anti-tank. Nevertheless, the drawbacks of both vehicles were obvious from the start - too light to protect the crew and difficulty reloading doomed the vehicle to a footnote in armor history.

Author Ken Estes, photos from Ontos affictionato Don Moriarty, illustrators Henry Morshead and Johnny Shumate provide some fine drawings to help the reader clearly see the decisions that led to the design and fielding of both of these armored vehicles. The book has clear (albeit very small) black & white photos, line drawings and cut-aways. As with all New Vanguard books, the trade off is smaller size, compact narratives but more affordable than other sources.

Both vehicles are important to study since current demands exist to this day to fill the void with light but powerful weapons to assist the infantry. Recommended for armor buffs or modelers who want an excellent read of these mostly forgotten vehicles.
