worthwhile reading for Robbins fans

This was Robbins' second novel and there is a marked improvement in the quality of the writing over his first, NEVER LOVE A STRANGER. Robbins appeared to have had a better editor this time around, but more than that, the tone is more even and the narrative more coherent than before.
I've always appreciated the fact that Robbins didn't "dumb down" or spell everything out. The reader is asked to fill in a missing blank now and then. The plot of THE DREAM MERCHANTS is quite complicated, but with complexity comes variety and action, and Robbins was a master at keeping things moving.
THE DREAM MERCHANTS deals with the early Hollywood moguls, the deals they negotiated, the swindles they perpetrated. It treats of movie stars and directors, technicians and PR spokespeople only insofar as they relate directly to the moguls. There is a fairly long subplot involving a spider woman of an actress with whom the protagonist, Johnny Edge, becomes involved. Aside from that, the plot revolves mostly around the Hollywood bigwigs' business deals. But having already read quite a bit about the making of movies from the technical end, I was interested in glimpsing Hollywood from a different perspective this time around.

Good early Robbins

In 1949, Harold Robbins followed up his first novel, Never Love a Stranger, with what would prove to be the first of a loose trilogy he would write on the history of the American film industry. The Dream Merchants covers the pioneer days of the motion picture, depicting the rise of a primarily Jewish owned and operated Independent company that would take on the WASP led motion picture patents combine and rise to become one of the major studios of the 1920's and 30's. Though the studio is called Magnum and headed by Peter Kessler and Johnny Edge, Robbins draws upon the history of Universal Pictures (where he was an executive in the 1940's) and its founder Carl Laemmle and his successor and long time associate Robert Cochrane.

The book is structured between short passages set in 1938 narrated in the first person by Johnny Edge, who has just become the new President of Magnum, but must already contend with a board room power struggle as well as the news that his old friend Peter has suffered a massive stroke, and longer sections flashing back over various time points between 1908 and 1938 depicting the rise of Magnum Studio and the ups and downs of the friendship between Johnny and the members of the Kessler family. In these flashbacks, Johnny and the Kesslers work hard to raise what started out as a simple nickoledon business and transform their venture into a major producer and distributor of movies throughout the world. Over the 30 years, Kessler's children grow up, one of whom, Doris, falls in love with Johnny, and Mark, who becomes a spoiled adult child of Hollywood . A section of the book is also devoted to Johnny's experiences as a soldier in World War I where he suffers an injury that will change his life forever. There also a heaping slice of steamy melodrama in which Johnny becomes involved with an ambitious actress who unbeknownst to him is incestuously involved with a family member, a character that has more than a passing resemblance to "the Great Profile" of American theater and film, John Barrymore.

The Dream Merchants is especially strong in evoking a sense of family and friendship that exists between Johnny, the Kesslers and other people who come into their orbit. You really feel these characters care for each other. Likewise, thanks to his background as a film executive, Robbins realistically evokes the business side of the industry with a number of scenes depicting bargaining, deal making, and executive maneuvering both within a company and between rival studios. Though tame in comparison to some of his later, more sexually explicit books, The Dream Merchants is still an entertaining read. It may not rank up there with What Makes Sammy Run as a Hollywood literary novel, it more than does the job as a good entertainment with plenty of heat, humor, humanity and heart.

Fame, Money, Sex - This book has it all

Very compelling and captivating story set against the glamorous backdrop of Hollywood and the entertainment industry! I felt myself really become invested in the lives of the characters in this book. Their triumphs and their trials had me laughing and crying all at once. The Dream Merchants is by far one of my favorite Harold Robbins sagas of fame, money, sex, and wild adventures.

Bought the book for the class, but never read it. Not much interesting

Just bought it for my PT class, but never got interest in reading it, not necessarily bad book, but at least not very attractive and I could manage to get A without reading it. I guess the class was badly designed. Thus can not rate the book accurately.

My boyfriend needed this book for a class he was ...

My boyfriend needed this book for a class he was taking. It was well written, obviously, but a little on the dry side. It's tough to be "Wide Awake" if the book isn't interesting. But they can't all be, right? Overall, it served it's purpose and it was less expensive going through Amazon than the campus bookstore.

This is a very user-friendly book. The first half is really helpful and the second half has great readings. I especially like the sections on Disability Studies and Happiness.

I suppose it is alright

It is not like i wanted to read this. I got it for my English class. It is pretty helpful so far and it has a lot of examples which is good. So all in all, it is a good book.

Get the 2nd Edition!

McLeod-while occasionally repetative-does a really good job of giving a good overview and summarizing the 'big names' in Postcolonial lit, however there is a 2nd edition out there that is better and a little longer. I'd recommend that one over this one. Especially since most professors want the newest edition.

Don't be scared - John Mc Leod is at hand!

Beginning Postcolonialism provides a basic introduction to the nebulous (and sometimes seemingly-inpenetrable) world of post-colonial theory. If you're encountering post-colonial theory for the first time, or you've already been baffled by Bhabha and scared by Spivak, then this is the book for you! Unlike many post-colonialism readers on the market, Beginning Postcolonialism assumes no prior knowledge of the subject. It provides the reader with a basic understanding of the major themes of post-colonial theory and explains in simple terms the main ideas of pre-eminent post-colonial critics. It's well-written, coherently laid-out and is by far the most encouraging and reader-friendly book on the subject I've come across. The extensive bibliography will be of interest to graduate students, but they may otherwise find that this book is not meaty enough to suit their advanced level of study. For the beginner or the confused, however, it's a great resource!

Excellent Overview

I was so happy to find this book. Even though there is a strong emphasis on literary theory, this book was so helpful in giving an overview of the main thinkers, main issues, key historical points, and key tensions in postcolonial theory. I found it much more helpful than A Very Short Introduction to Postcolonialism. The writing is very accessible. An annotated bibliography is included at the end of each chapter. I think this book would be most helpful to read front to back if you are interested in postcolonial theory from a literary studies perspective. If you are in another field, you may want to skip around. You can find selections from this book (including searching keywords) at google books, which I found helpful in identifying the areas I wanted to read and those I wanted to skip.

About the Author

David Haber, PhD , is an assistant professor in the Gerontology Department at Western Oregon University, Monmouth, Oregon. Prior to his current affiliation he worked at several institutes of higher education.

For a decade he was the John and Janice Fisher distinguished professor of wellness and gerontology at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. For the decade prior to that, Dr. Haber was a professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Before that he served as the director of the Center for Healthy Aging, at Creighton University’s multidisciplinary shopping mall–based geriatric center in Omaha, Nebraska.

His early academic and research career included positions at the University of the District of Columbia; the University of South Florida, Tampa; and the University of Southern California, where he also received his PhD in sociology from the Andrus Gerontology Center.

Dr. Haber is a fellow in the Gerontological Society of America, and he is recognized for two Best Practice Awards from the National Council on Aging, the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, and the Molly Mettler Award for Leadership in Health Promotion from the National Council on Aging.

The third edition of this book, Health Promotion and Aging, was selected for the 2004 Book of the Year Award by theAmerican Journal of Nursing in two categories: Gerontologic Nursing, and Community and Public Health. Dr. Haber also authored Health Care for an Aging Society.

Dr. Haber has authored 87 academic publications and has been project director or principal investigator of 20 research or demonstration grants related to health and aging. Typically, these applied projects involved gerontology and health professional students leading community health promotion ventures with older adults. Dr. Haber’s current interest in life is cat therapy with frail elders.

Great handheld reference for nursing students!

I use this handheld book for quick references at clinicals and in class. It has great color illustrations and is very easy to read. The full sized text was assigned in my assessment class so I went ahead and bought the handheld. I would reccomend it to any nursing student. It covers everything, and at the end it has a full scale assessment in detail that I found very helpful on my final grade for a head to toe assessment.

Jarvis' book is compact, colorful, relates the basics to the nursing diagnosis, and does so with a "window" style format that is color coded. No long narrative paragraphs. Highlights that are usable, quick, easy to look up, and reference. The book is small enough to fit into your pocket, bag, purse, or laptop case on top of the 17" traveling computer. Head to Toe assessments, broken down, what it means, what you look for, how it relates to nursing diagnoses. Quick, easy,userfriendly, portable. Meets the need for balancing work, quick study, and travel requirements all in one place. Good memory jogger.

This little manual was a wonderful reference guide for me while studying for nursing skills, as well as in the hospital environment. It saved me from having to bring the actual textbook with me if I needed to review something at the patient bedside. A must have for aspiring nurses if using the textbook by the same author and publisher.
