Nellie Stone Johnson currently lives in Minneapolis. She maintained her own business as a seamstress until her early 90s, and continues to be active in politics as a life member of the NAACP and the National Council for Negro Women. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Urban League's Cecil E. Newman Humanitarian Award, and holds an honorary degree from St. Cloud State University.

David Brauer is a freelance writer and the Minnesota correspondent for Newsweek and the Chicago Tribune. An award-winning journalist, he is a contributing editor for Mpls.St.Paul magazine.

Nellie Stone Johnson is a major force in Minnesota and national politics. In this lucid oral history from Brauer, the Minnesota correspondent for Newsweek and the Chicago Tribune, she modestly reflects on her campaign during most of the 20th-century to improve educational and job opportunities and health care. Johnson recounts her prosperous farm beginnings with a father who organized other farmers in the face of corporate greed, racism and regionalism. One of eight children, she explains the credo of her clan, which refused to be rigidly defined simply by being African-American, as evidenced by her father's involvement in progressive and New Deal politics (largely defined by white, Southern Democrats) at a time when most African-Americans still voted for the party of Lincoln. Influenced by her father's activism, Johnson later became a union organizer, enduring two failed marriages that fell victim to her single-minded devotion to her work. She commends FDR's administration for the commitment to end federal discrimination, but openly admits that racism played a major role in her own decision not to run for Congress. After her union pals ousted her from office because of her left-wing leanings, she became a seamstress while retaining an abiding interest in politics. Age did little to slow her down as she swapped ideas with Thurgood Marshall, served a long stint with the Democratic National Committee from 1979 to 1988, toured Africa and battled with white feminists over the inclusion of women of color in the ERA fight. Brauer skillfully conveys the story of an inspiring and noble woman, still active in her 90s, who has made every minute of her life count.

A social activist, labor organizer, "third-generation feminist," Johnson has devoted her entire life to political change. Now 95 years old, she is still busy, dictating her life story. Raised by farming parents who valued education, hard work, and equal rights, she was an activist from the day she learned to speak. She brought on change by organizing labor unions in the days when being affiliated with unions was dangerous. After unions were accepted in work environments, she was free to pursue more public activities, such as politics. Although she did not graduate from college, she is a lifelong learner and holds an honorary degree from St. Cloud (Minnesota) State University. Because the book is presented as an oral history, and Johnson has a tendency to ramble, it could use a bit of editing for organization, but on the whole, it is a fascinating look into the life of a powerful, energetic woman. About the Author
Jeffrey Richards is Professor of Cultural History at Lancaster University. Among his books are Hollywood's Ancient Worlds, Sir Henry Irving: A Victorian Actor and his World and Imperialism and Music. The Railway Station: a Social History, co-written with John MacKenzie, has been reissued in Faber Finds. Jeffrey Richards is general editor of the Studies in Popular Culture series. John MacKenzie is Professor Emeritus of Imperial History at Lancaster University. He also holds honorary professorship of the Universities of Aberdeen, St. Andrews, Stirling and Edinburgh and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.He has published extensively in the field of British imperial history: among his books are Propaganda and Empire (1984), The Empire of Nature (1988), Orientalism: History, Theory and the Arts (1995), Empires of Nature and the Nature of Empires (1997), The Scots in South Africa (2007) and Museums and Empire (2009). He has edited a number of books, including catalogues for the National Portrait Gallery (David Livingstone and the Victorian Encounter with Africa, 1996) and the Victoria and Albert Museum (The Victorian Vision, 2001), and most recently Peoples, Nations and Cultures (2005). He is currently working on two edited works, European Empires and the People (2010) and Scotland and the British Empire (2011). He continues to travel extensively around the world, both for research and for pleasure, and has maintained his interest in railway stations and the societies they serve. He now lives in retirement in Perthshire, cultivating a large garden.

A really enjoyable read for those of us who love trains, railway stations and history. Beautifully written, by serious historians whose writing has a delightful light touch. Nothing pedantic about this book, as it walks the reader through every facet of railway stations and how they enriched our world (especially Britain) over the years. I plan to read it again, just for the plain joy of it.

About the Author

Dr. Seiden has been a medical educator for his entire career. He has taught human gross anatomy and embryology for over forty years. He directed the course in Gross and Developmental Anatomy at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School for 20 years. For over 20 years, he also has taught extensively in courses in preparation for the USMLE Step 1 examination. Dr. Corbett is Associate Professor, Department of General Surgery, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

About the Author
Edward T. Welch (PhD, University of Utah) serves both the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF) and Westminster Theological Seminary. At CCEF, he is director of counseling and academic dean, as well as a counselor and faculty member. At Westminster, he is professor of practical theology. He is author of Blame It on the Brain and When People Are Big and God Is Small and has contributed to several other books and journals, including the Journal of Psychology and Christianity.

Excellent Book on God's Greatness!

Welch has written a gem on the need for us to realize how great God really is and how we need to stop fearing other people so much!
The focus of Welch's book is to have a greater healthy fear of God to the point that other people have less power and control over our lives.
The points Welch describes in his book include:
1. The fear of God is the best treatment for the fear of man.
2. Jesus was not a people-pleaser.
3. Having more fear of man than God is idolatry.
4. When we fear God we think of ourselves less.
5. When we spend more time with God, opinions of ourselves and what others think of us matter less.
6. We should love people more and need them less (only God can truly provide for our needs).
7. We love others because God first loved us.
8. When God is reduced to our feelings, He becomes less awesome to us while people become larger.
The "fear of God" may be defined as having a healthy reverence for God - He loves us and does not want us to be so afraid of Him that we are scared of having a personal relationship with Him.
Read the book and be encouraged to be more concerned about what God thinks and less concerned about what other people think!

I'll have to admit, I was a little leery of this book from the title - peer pressure, codependency - come on, another Christian psycho-babble book? But I read it since a friend was reading it and I'll admit - I was wrong. When People Are Big is an outstanding book that has something to say about the self-centered psychology of Freud and Maslow - it's all focused on the wrong thing: man. Welch, himself a Ph.D. recipient in counseling psychology chooses to focus on God's Word as the source of truth and understanding regarding the nature of man. His basic concept is that man is created to bring glory to God and in saying this notes that God has designed us with certain "needs" or "desires" that are to be fulfilled by God Himself. The problem arises, according to Welch, when we replace the proverbial God-shaped vacuum in our lives with temporal things of this world that are not only unable to satisfy our longings, but in fact prohibit God from being able to! As man turns to self for "actualitization," he finds that his highest purpose doesn't really supply meaning or significance. Only in a proper relationship with God through the sanctifying work of Christ on the cross can man truly understand his true nature and true self.

Ultimately, Welch argues, the problem with man is low esteem for his Creator. If we truly lived before an Audience of One, Welch believes that many of our daily "problems" would be solved with a proper perspective - we would see ourselves in a proper light and we would see that we are not the source of that light, but created to be the reflectors of it to others. One of the great paradoxes of the Christian life is truly understanding ourselves - totally depraved and unworthy of salvation, yet by the grace of God we are made into heirs to the throne clothed with the righteousness of Christ Himself! The key, Welch states, is our ability to realize that this transformation from rags to riches is not based upon who we are or what we can accomplish, but rather on the work of a Holy and Merciful God.

This is a great book for every Christian today - we all have problems and trials we face, we all have people that we give too much power over our lives, we all need a greater appreciation for and understanding of the majesty of God. Welch concludes that if we could just understand what Scripture is seeking to show us, that our lives would be radically transformed - not only a saving grace would be ours, but a sanctifying grace that would overflow into the lives of those around us - even those we despise and dislike! Francis Schaeffer wrote a classic little book titled The Mark of a Christian and in it claims that the world will know we are Christians by our love for each other - Welch agrees with this sentiment and helps us understand why we haven't arrived at this place yet!

Bar None, the most helpful, the best book I have ever read

This book was recommended to my husband and I during marriage counseling with a very prestigious, well known doctor.
I wish we had read it a long time ago. I have never had the biblical concept of *love* in its truest sense explained so clearly.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has struggled with dysfunctional family relationships, codependency issues, or even just loving your enemies.
I want to buy a case of these and pass them out to everyone we know!! That's how great this book is.
