This survey of European history covers a period of one and a half centuries which witnessed the beginnings of the contemporary world. In his account of the economic, social, intellectual, and governmental structure and development of pre-revolutionary Europe, Doyle stresses throughout the importance of economic and social trends, and places emphasis on the analysis of the structure of society as well as the narration of events. He shows how the contradictions of the old order contributed to a crisis which affected several of the major states in the late eighteenth century, when the growth of governmental power led to a series of clashes between governments and governing classes. Out of these conflicts, particularly in France, arose a revolutionary crisis. The nature of this crisis, and the impact of the change it produced, are examined in detail in the final section of the book. For this second edition, Doyle has revised the text of the book, and comprehensively updated the Bibliography.

Very disappointed

I am very disapointed with this text. It tackles a hard subject matter but fails completely on organization skills and structure for a historical piece of work. The ideas seem jumbled and all over within each sub-category. It is very annoying that the author refers to certain individuals (whom he must feel are important for the context of his claim) but NEVER gives any support whom these individuals are or what their significance is within that context. I am part way through this book preparing for a graduate school history class in the Fall and it amazes me that this text was chosen. I would have hoped that at this level of intellectual learning, a university would choose texts that are prime examples of what to strive for in historical writing. The author's context of the subject meets the bar, but yet again, I will say the organization and structure is well below average.

well written, boring as...

This book is an excellent source for this time and place; it is written academically and could be used in a college course. It is a little dry, however, and boring as hell. Great book for history enthusiasts and bookworms like me.
