A Masterpiece...
By FrKurt Messick
Marilyn Stokstad has put together a real masterpiece of art history with her book, Art History. In collaboration with Bradford Collins, and with contributed chapters from Stephen Addiss, Chu-tsing Li, Marylin Rhie and Christopher Roy, this large volume published by noted art publishers Henry N. Abrams, Inc. is deserving of pride of place on any art bookshelf.
The scope of this work is as broad as is the expanse of human history. Indeed, the first chapter begins with a survey of prehistoric art and prehistory. Spanning all the ancient cultures, there are chapters devoted to the art of the ancient Near East, Egypt, the Aegean, Etruscan and Roman art, Christian, Jewish and Byzantine art, Islamic art, the art of India, China, Japan, the Americas and Africa. And from there, it gets complicated!
This book tackles all the issues of art: philosophical considerations (the relationship between art and reality, and the meaning and importance of beauty in art), focus on artists in general and in particular, society's relationship to art, including the role of the patron, the importance of museums, and an investigation that goes behind the phrase, 'I know what I like.'
'Art history, in contrast to art criticism, combines the formal analysis of works of art--concentrating mainly on the visual elements in the work of art--with the study of the works' broad historical context. Art historians draw on biography to learn about artists' lives, social history to understand the economic and political forces shaping artists, their patrons, and their public, and the history of ideas to gain an understanding of the intellectual currents influencing artists' work.'
In addition to presenting a history of art, Stokstad and her contributors also present an introduction to various aspects of art appreciation, without with art history loses much meaning. Each chapter has an explanation of the techniques that were developed and important during the time under examination (for instance, lost wax casting, glassamking and Egyptian faience, Japanese woodblock technique, and Islamic carpet making, among many others, are illustrated in detail to enhance the knowledge and appreciation of the finished art works). Each chapter and time period also has a section entitled Elements of Architecture, which include discussion on elements from pyramids to skyscrapers and much in between.
The text is clear and concise, carefully explaining technical terms when they are used, and then using them sparingly. Every page is a visual feast, with full colour plates of photographs of paintings, sculpture, artists, locations, or architectural examples in great form, as Henry N. Abrams, Inc. publishers are famous for doing. There are literally thousands of illustrations, as there are often many per page; almost no page is without one, and the book is nearly 1200 pages long.
As an aid for those who will use this book for more scholarly purposes, there is an extensive bibliography in the back, in three classifications of listings -- general surveys and art history references, a selected list of art history journals, and then a chapter-specific directory of further reading for each art topic/period. Additionally, it has after the bibliography as Website Directory of Museums, which includes museums in every state in the United States and most major museums around the world. The index includes listings by artist, period, topic, and particular works of art.
This book has been intended to be useful as a text for a course in art appreciation, but also designed to be a joy to read for the casual reader who might not want an academically rigourous presentation. As Stokstad says in her preface, the intention was make this book itself a work of art, and in that task she has succeeded admirably.

Superb overview & reference!
By A Customer
This book is simply wonderful. It is indeed physically ponderous (this 2nd edition is one very, very large book, not two slipcased books as shown in some illustrations). However, its content easily compensates for its considerable bulk. All historical periods of art history are chronicled, with copious illustrations well-produced and nearly all in color. The text is incisive and easy to follow, yet never boring.
I recommend this book to any and all art lovers, whether beginners, advanced students, or just those who desire a comprehensive reference for library or home use. I personally consider this publication a better choice than the otherwise excellent Janson "History of Art" for most readers-- the writing is just more user-friendly, in my opinion (and the content is more inclusive, especially regarding non-Western art).

The Dragons' Demon: A Dragon's Dream (Ethereal Foes), by Marie Harte

A prank gone wrong throws three unlikely partners together: A demon. A dragon. And an egg.

Ethereal Foes Book 1

In the ordinary world, forces are at work which keep the balance of the universe in order. Enter Eve Sinclair, a higher demon with a mission--to sway those souls on the brink of Decision, to push them toward hell.

After a prank played by her brothers, Eve finds herself holding the proverbial bag, accused of stealing a precious dragon egg. Worse, it's a royal egg, as she learns from Ranton, the furious commander of the dragon legion.

Not a creature to have on one's bad side, Ranton shifts between his human and dragon forms, keeping Eve off-balance and off her game. Normally a master at manipulating males, Eve finds that Ranton is more than a match for her...as is his brother, the new dragon king. In their arms, she's mere putty.

And soon they're not only molding her desires, but her heart.

Warning, this title contains the following: explicit sex, graphic language, ménage a troi, and steamy dragon love.

The Dragons' Demon
By mnix
Taking a break from her job of helping people decide between Heaven and Hell, Eve goes for a drink with her brothers. Eve Sinclair cannot believe her ears when her brothers state that not only did they steal a dragon's egg, but a royal one at that. A prank gone bad, Eve heads out to locate the egg and return it to its nest before anyone realizes it gone. Being a higher demon, Eve cannot allow either her or her brothers to be found with the egg. Never did Eve expect the feelings that affect her the minute she picks up the egg.

Ranton is the leader of the Dragon warriors and was placed in charge of this particular egg as its guardian. Finding it not only in the arms of a demon, but happily there, Ranton decides to discover just what this demon has that the dragons would want. Ranton soon discovers what Eve has that he wants and the extremely hot sex is only part of it. Both Eve and Ranton are shaken by the instantaneous passion they experience. Ranton knows just how the dragon in the egg, his brother, will matter in the future of the dragons. After the egg brought them together, will he also stand between Ranton and Eve?

The Dragons' Demonbrings both dragons and demons together - not something that usually will happen. Eve is a higher demon with a demanding job, but even she cannot allow anything happen to a defenseless dragon egg. Ranton is furious that an egg under his protection was taken from the dragon nest, but he's even more surprised when he finds it. Eve and Ranton start off circling around each other, but I was not surprised by the quickness of the passion between them. I was surprised when the egg hatched and just what changes this dragon brought to not only Eve and Ranton, but also to other characters in this mix up. The world of dragons and demons will never be the same again. The Dragons' Demon is a sexy look at demons and dragons that has several humorous points. If you love reading about beings of the underworld, then you will want to add The Dragons' Demon to your library.

Trying to fix the potential damage caused by her brothers' irresponsible prank, Eve is left holding the proverbial bag. Only in this case, the bag is a royal dragon egg, and none other than the Commander of the dragon legion himself has come to collect the precious egg and punish the wrongdoers.

But Ranton's ideas for punishment change dramatically when he lays eyes on the beautiful little demon holding his baby brother's egg...

I'll admit it, I am very partial to stories with dragons - especially shape shifting dragons - but even considering my own partiality to the genre, I can safely state that Marie Harte's The Dragons' Demon absolutely rocked!!! Harte's offering to Samhain Publishing's I Dream of Dragons 1 anthology is extremely sensual, with plenty of M/F love scenes and a few M/F/M ménage scenes, but she ingeniously mixes it up with a good dose of real emotion. Although a short story, it is easy to feel the attraction between these characters, and even easier to understand when that attraction grows into something more real.

Ranton has to be one of the hottest dragons around - in more ways than one - and his possessiveness of spunky little demon Eve fans the flames of heat even higher in this sassy romance.

Eve is more than capable of holding her own with the domineering dragon commander, and pulls a few tricks of her own that keep Ranton on his toes!

I haven't found any information on either the author's or publisher's sites regarding whether The Dragons' Demon is or will be connected to other stories by Marie Harte, but I will most certainly be standing in line for any sequels that are released. There were several supporting characters I would dearly love to see more of!

Higher demon Eve Sinclair's bet with her siblings has gone very wrong and it's left up to her to fix it. She never believed that they'd actually go along with it and steal a dragon egg and bring it to the Ordinary world but now it's up to her to fix the situation - hopefully before it hatches.

Her job of swaying souls teetering on the brink of Decision will have to be put on hold while she retrieves the dragon egg and returns it to Carmaron before she discovers that her precious egg is missing. There's only one little problem with her plan, the missing dragon's egg has already been discovered - by Ranton, the commander of the dragon legion, and the caretaker of the missing egg. To complicate matters, this isn't just any ordinary dragon's egg . . . oh no, this is a royal egg, it's the future dragon king.

From the moment Eve finds the egg where James and Duncan said they'd left it she feels an immediate bond with the tiny being inside. She knows that she'll never let the egg go despite the fact that demons and dragons do not mix. Soon after finding the egg, Ranton arrives demanding it from her. She refuses to turn it over to him and Ranton is befuddled by the egg's obvious contentment while being held in Eve's arms. The simple fact that the egg is so peacefully lying against the chest of a demon proves that she's special. Ranton is equally curious to find out the identities of the individuals who originally stole the egg and what's so special about this demon that has his future king is such a state of bliss. Never mind the attraction to her that he feels himself. Be prepared for some severe clashing of wills as demons, angels, and dragons collide and battle it out over who's really guilty of stealing a royal dragon's egg.

Marie Harte will leave readers gasping for breath with her contribution to the I DREAM OF DRAGONS series. THE DRAGON'S DEMON gives readers a variety of characters whom we generally think of as evil or villainess and presents them as the type of `people' you'd actually like to know. I got a huge kick out of Eve and the egg's attachment for one another but even more than that loved the ongoing battle between Eve and Ranton for dominance. She's no shrinking violet and isn't about to put up with his big nasty dragon disposition so reading about these two coming together is a lot of fun. Obviously there will be trouble stemming from the theft of the dragon's egg in the first place and I'm dying to know how that turns out for James and Duncan who are both sent off for their punishments toward the end of this story. Wonderfully done Ms. Harte! This is a fun tale which I highly recommend.

"Kim’s book is nothing less than a complete handbook for an entire profession. Kim’s unique background in the practice, pedagogy, and epistemology of the design business has given her the experience needed to write the ultimate ‘how-to’ book. Every step in this fascinating and multi-faceted discipline is described in detail in simple, readable prose, richly illustrated with examples taken from real products, real clients, and real design problems. This book is comprehensive in its scope, exhaustive in its depth, authoritative in its practice, and priceless in its wisdom. I’ve no doubt that this will become the most dog-eared, annotated and worn-from-many-readings volume in your library." —Alan Cooper, bestselling author of The Inmates Are Running the Asylum and About Face 3: The Essentials of Interaction Design

A "desert island" design book, and an excellent guide
By Carl Seglem
Kim Goodwin has written a book that I've been hoping for for years.

It's the book I turn to when I want thorough yet approachable guidance or reminders for how to do design.

I told a colleague of mine: "Finally! The textbook and handbook for the practice of interaction design!" Much inspiring and useful work has come before, but I haven't found such a comprehensive and useful how-to book for practicing and aspiring interaction designers.

If I could only have three books on my shelf to refer to in my interaction design (or if I were on a desert island where I was going to be designing interactive systems with people), I'd have:
* Kim Goodwin's Designing for the Digital Age for process,
* Jennifer Tidwell's Designing Interfaces for patterns, and
* Alan Cooper et al's About Face (3) for principles.

Goodwin explains it all....
By John McSwain
Designing for the Digital Age: How to Create Human-Centered Products and Services serves as an excellent guide and reference for new and experienced human centered design practitioners. Kim Goodwin (VP of Cooper) does a great job translating her goal-oriented design processes into clear and understandable terms. Human/user centered design books can easily be littered with heavy jargon or unintelligible references that make it difficult or impossible to understand or practice. Goodwin makes a conscious effort to explain and visualize many of the concepts introduced in each chapter and keeps the research lingo within reason. For example, in Chapter 12: Defining Requirements, Goodwin dispels what requirements aren't (i.e. features or specifications) and promptly outlines what is needed to generate effective requirements (i.e. data needs, functional needs, product / service qualities, constraints). In addition, Goodwin's writing style guarantees a cognitive learning experience with most readers by providing multiple exercises and scenarios that engage and evoke a desire for comprehension. The photography, diagrams, and charting are plentiful and supplement the subject matter effectively also.

I believe that this book is easily a pylon supporting the ever-swelling weight of UCD with its hoard of overlapping design disciplines. I recommend it to anyone interested in design or the design process...

Have sticky notes ready!
By Jane Childs
Kim Goodwin has written a book that is destined to become a classic for Interaction Design practitioners. Whether you're new to the field of Interaction Design or an experienced practitioner, this book really does have something for everyone. My copy is already liberally tagged with sticky notes.

At 728 pages the book is detailed and thorough and designed as a walk through the end-to-end process of creating a product or service. Don't be put off by its weight, the color-coded sections allow you to easily dive into specific areas: Research, Modeling, Requirements, Framework, Detailed Design, Ensuring Success. The chapters within each section provide detail, examples, and case studies. For example, if interviewing is not your strength, the research section provides guidance from planning your research through to conducting interviews with targeted people. The annotated interviews are a terrific way of illustrating the points made earlier in the chapter and pulling all the information together.

Thoughtfully illustrated and beautifully designed, this will become one of those books found on Interaction Designers bookshelves that shows signs of regular use. Product Managers and Development Teams seeking to understand how to build a truly differentiated product or service will also gain much from this wonderfully comprehensive book.
